Link to the video about St. Francis art projects and peace day:
The International Day of Peace is a is a global effort that seeks: “To encourage the observation of a worldwide cease-fire, 24-hour vigil for peace and nonviolence on the 21st September in every house of worship and place of spiritual practice, by all religious and spiritually based groups and individuals, and by all men, women and children who seek peace in the world.” St. Francis de Sales School will celebrate the International Day of Peace on Monday, September 21st, 2015 with prayer, music and art!
St. Francis de Sales School Community is invited to join the spirit of peace with a “dress for peace” day. Participants are asked to wear bright colors, shirts with themes of peace, faith or global/world themes (ex. country flags, international soccer shirts).
On FRIDAY MORNING (7:00 AM -7:40 AM), September 23rd students will display works of art outside in front of the school (weather permitting) that celebrate the International Day of Peace (internationally recognized as September 21st each year). Students in art have studied the history of peace day as a 24 hour “Peace One Day” cease-fire. Students discussed our faith and the importance of peace in our hearts, classroom, community and world. All St. Francis de Sales school community members are invited to join the spirit of peace with a “dress for peace” day. Participants will wear bright colors, shirts with themes of peace or global/world themes.
Giant PEACEMAKER puppets will be on display by St. Francis. They include: Jesus (the ultimate peacemaker!), Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Malala Yousufzai (Malala is a 16 year old girl from Pakistan who speaks out for education in her country and around the world. Malala continues to fight for educational opportunities for oppressed children. In areas where more than half the population cannot read, her young voice speaks for those who are too afraid to), and Jeremy Gilley (Gilley is an English filmmaker and founder of Peace One Day. In 1998, Gilley began to make the Peace One Day documentary, eventually deciding to aim for a UN resolution. This goal was reached in 2001 when UN resolution (A/Res/55/282) was unanimously adopted to establish the first ever day of global ceasefire and non-violence fixed in the calendar as September 21st annually.
On THURSDAY, September 22nd, 4th grade students will process into Mass carrying “Peace Doves” they have made in art class.
We celebrate Peace Day as a global cease fire and a day of faith, love and hope for a more peaceful world! We hope all will take this opportunity to make peace in your own relationships as well as impact the larger conflicts of our time. Imagine what a whole Day of Ceasefire would mean to humankind. The International Day of Peace is not only about creating peace between nations, it’s about non-violence in our homes, communities and
schools. Therefore Peace Day is relevant to every human being on the planet. Who will YOU make peace with on this day?
Fourth graders will have special art projects for that week’s Mass. thank you for making peace day a great experience for our students!
