West Virginia First Lady Joanne Tomblin visited St. Francis Central Catholic School Wednesday afternoon.

Tomblin presented the first-place award for the Scholastic Summer Challenge to students in the first through fifth grades. The challenge is a free program designed to keep kids reading over the summer months when school is not in session.

“You are now leaders among the students of West Virginia,” Tomblin said, during an assembly of the students. “The governor and I can’t be more proud of what you’ve done.”

This is the second year in a row that St. Francis has won first place in the challenge.

Scholastic conducts the competition through its website by logging the number of minutes read by each individual student. Tomblin said St. Francis students logged more than 26,000 minutes of reading time out of more than 58,000 minutes logged for the entire Mountain State.

“Always aim for achievement and success will follow,” Tomblin said.
