The St. Francis Spring Lunch-time Book Clubs are back and  will be starting in two weeks. The Book Clubs are a time for students to explore books they might not have thought of

reading and to get together in a casual atmosphere to discuss books with their peers.  The students will choose the books for the rest of the book club meetings at their first meeting.

Book clubs will meet the fourth Monday of the month from January through May (1/23, 2/27, 3/27, 4/24, 5/22).  The May meeting will be a Book Club party.  They will meet at the following times:

  • 2nd Grade Book Club 11:30 – 12:00
  • 3rd Grade Book Club 12:00 – 12:30
  • 4th/5th Grade Book Club 12:00 – 12:30
  • Middle School Book Club 12:30 – 1:00

30 minutes is a very short time for a Book Club, so students should bring cold lunch on Book Club days so that they can get started on time.

The only rules for the book club are:  students must be respectful of each other and of each other’s opinions; students must behave appropriately; and students must read the month’s book before Book Club day so that they can participate actively in discussion.

A limited number of the books for January are available in our library.  Contact Mrs. Roff to reserve one on a first come, first serve basis.  Students who borrow books from the St. Francis library should read them and return them as soon as possible so that other students will have a chance to read them.

Parent volunteers are needed to help facilitate small group discussions.  Discussion prompts are provided, so volunteering involves sitting with a group of approximately 6 students, moving the discussion along when needed, and making sure that everyone has a chance to participate.  Parents can sign up to volunteer at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F084EAAA72BA0F85-stfrancis .

The books for the first Book Club Meetings are:

  • 2nd Grade Book Club The Seven Treasure Hunts by Betsy Byars
  • 3rd Grade Book Club Dark Day in the Deep Sea by Mary Pope Osborne
  • 4th/5th Grade Book Club The Mysterious Matter of I.M. Fine by Diane Stanley
  • Middle School Book Club The Miserable Mill (A Series of Unfortunate Events book #4) by Lemony Snicket

Books for the remainder of the year will be announced after the first Book Club meeting.

To register your child for Book Club, please complete and return the registration form.

We are looking forward to fun and animated discussions and lots of good books!
