Power Up and read!

Dear Parents,

Our school is once again participating in the Scholastic Summer Challenge. It is an online summer reading program in which students log their reading minutes and help our school compete with other schools in West Virginia. Two years ago, our school was the top school in the state for the second year in a row! Our success motivated other schools in the region to read more, so we fell to second last year. Last year, our top student read over 16,000 minutes, and St. Francis students collectively read almost 76,000 minutes! If all of our eligible students read just 5 minutes per day, they could collectively read over 175,000 minutes over the remaining weeks in the challenge!!

Students entering kindergarten through 8th grade are eligible to participate in the challenge. The student who reads the most minutes will win a trophy, and winners in each class will also receive awards. In addition, there may be surprise awards for any students, classes or grades that read a particularly high number of minutes. In addition, if students pass the weekly goal on the scholastic website, they can choose and accrue “medals” on their page.

It is easy to participate. If your child participated last year, you can use the same log-in that you used last year. To create a free summer challenge log, go to www.scholastic.com/summer. Make sure that you choose to link the minutes to the school. You will receive an email from scholastic to approve your child’s minutes being linked with the school. You can log reading minutes on a daily or weekly basis. However, minutes must be logged within two weeks of the day they are accrued. While on the website, you can track your child’s progress and our school’s reading progress.

Make reading a big part of your family’s summer fun and help your child maintain and improve his/her reading skills! Read, Read, Read this summer!

Sincerely,

Kim Roff
