Grades: Kindergarten (K)

Students in Kindergarten do not receive letter grades.  Instead, they are assessed by their teacher in each content and skill standard in the following way:

  • M = 90% and above (the student has successfully demonstrated proficiency in the standard)
  • S = 80-89% (the student is making adequate progress toward proficiency in the standard)
  • NI = 70-79% (the student needs improvement and has either not demonstrated proficiency or is not making adequate progress toward proficiency)
  • U = 69% and below

Grades: Elementary (1st & 2nd)

Students in first and second grades will receive letter grades. Grade averages will be rounded beginning at the tenth decimal place.
(Example:  92.50 = 93 = A-) (Example: 92.49 = 92 = B+)

  • A+ = 100     A = 99-94        A- = 93
  • B+ = 92       B = 91-86        B- = 85
  • C+ = 84       C = 83-78       C- = 77
  • D+ = 76       D = 75-70       D- = 69
  • F = 68-Below
Specials, Science & Social Studies courses will be assessed with the following non-core grading scale.  These courses will not count towards a student’s GPA.
  • M (Mastery) = 90+
  • S (Satisfactory) = 80-89
  • NI (Needs Improvement) = 70-79
  • U (Unsatisfactory) 69 and below
Handwriting (1st & 2nd grade only) is assessed by the teacher in the following way:
  • E = student has made excellent progress and has demonstrated proficiency in the standard;
  • S = student has made successful progress and has demonstrated proficiency in the standard;
  • P = student is making adequate progress toward meeting the standard but has not yet demonstrated proficiency;
  • N = the student needs improvement and is not making adequate progress toward proficiency.

Grades: Intermediate School (3rd-5th)

Students in grades 3 through 5 receive letter grades.

Specials courses will be assessed with the following non-core grading scale.  These courses will not count towards a student’s GPA.
  • M (Mastery) = 90+
  • S (Satisfactory) = 80-89
  • NI (Needs Improvement) = 70-79
  • U (Unsatisfactory) 69 and below

Grades: Middle School (6th-8th)

Students will be assessed on a continual grading system for each subject from the beginning to the end of the school year.  A student’s GPA will not reset at the end of each trimester. This allows for the most accurate measure of achievement for the student.

Grading for High School eighth grade accredited courses (Math I & Spanish I) will be graded on the following 10-point scale, which is consistent with the West Virginia secondary schools grading policy:
  • A = 90-100
  • B = 80-89
  • C = 70-79
  • D = 60-69
  • F = 59-Below
Elective courses will be assessed with the following non-core grading scale.  These courses will not count towards a student’s GPA.
  • M (Mastery) = 90+
  • S (Satisfactory) = 80-89
  • NI (Needs Improvement) = 70-79
  • U (Unsatisfactory) 69 and below

Honor Roll

(Honor Roll is for students in grades 1st through 8th)

An honor roll is posted each quarter for those students attaining grades which entitle them to the following:

Principal’s Honor Roll – All A’s
Honor Roll of Achievement – All A’s and B’s

Failing Grades

Promotion to the next grade level in The Primary School at St. Francis Central Catholic is based solely upon a student’s ability to demonstrate proficiency in all of the standards for the core curriculum. However, students in grades three through five may still receive a grade of F if they do not meet classroom expectations, such as successfully completing daily homework assignments, projects, and portfolios.

Students will not receive credit for a class they fail. Students who receive a failing grade in a core content area for the entire year must pass the class using one of two methods. The preferred method is to complete the class again for credit during the school’s summer session or an equivalent summer program with the approval of the school’s administration. In the event that this is not possible, parents may request that the student take the failed class the next school year concurrently with the next class in the progression. In either case, students who fail to pass the class during the summer session or during the next school year will not be admitted to the next grade level at St. Francis Central Catholic.

Grade Point Average

A student’s academic progress is expressed by the point-hour ratio for each interim, quarter, semester, and final course grade. The ratio is found by dividing the number of points earned in each course by the credit value of each course as listed above (half credit courses receive half the number of points earned).

Academic Reports

Interim reports may be sent home for students who are experiencing difficulty in making progress. Parents may also monitor their child’s progress via ParentsWeb at any time during the academic year. Grades will be posted to ParentsWeb in a timely fashion.

Parents have the opportunity to consult with instructors on a regular basis during scheduled parent-teacher conferences, by appointment, and through email or phone during the instructional day.
