NATIONAL READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY
MARCH 2ND
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR. SEUSS!!

Did you know that Theodor Geisel was not really a doctor?  He just added “Dr.” to his name!!!!  On Wednesday, March 2nd, the second grade classes celebrated “Hats Off to Reading” day in honor of Theodor Geisel’s birthday.  Ted, as he was called by friends, became a wonderful writer of over 44 books!  Students learned about this creative man through a power-point presentation of interesting facts, and then used those facts to create a web to show what they learned.  They also completed math lessons that complimented National Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’s The Foot Book.

Both classes gathered in the library with for team building.  Students learned about cooperation, non-verbal communication, movement, stability, and gravity.

They worked in groups with plastic cups and index cards to see how high of a tower they could build.  Students also worked with a partner and created their very own Seuss characters.  Both activities took place WITHOUT any talking!!  Oh what a great time!!  It was very interesting to see the “thinking” that took place to accomplish these tasks!!

Students enjoyed listening to the reading of Seuss’s Bartholomew and the Oobleck, and had even more fun experimenting with making their very own Oobleck during Science time!

Thank you, Dr. Seuss, for contributing so many wonderful stories to our
LOVE OF READING!!!
