Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, the 8th graders enjoyed a day at WISP in Deep Creek for a team building event, mountain coaster ride and lunch. The students were given the task of designing and building a boat constructed of cardboard, plastic sheeting, duct tape, balloons, and pool noodles.  All materials needed to be utilized in the construction of the boat and they were challenged to paddle the boat across the lenght of the pool.

A variety of designs were attempted; including flat bottom raft, canoe/ark, and box styles. The captains piloted their boats with enthusiasm and skill.  Many of the boats sailed with success while others took on water early. The team building event was a great opportunity for the students to brainstorm, communicate, and support each other through the design and sailing process.

Afterwards, the students enjoyed lunch in the lodge and then rode the mountain coaster. Despite the chilly temperatures, the students enjoyed whizzing through the forest before heading back to school. Overall, the day provided a great day of celebration for St. Patrick and the St. Francis 8th grade class.
